Fashion designers take risks each season, acting on a gut feeling and proposing an idea of what we’ll want to wear six months from now. The Fall/Winter 2022 shows were no different, filled with styles that were intriguing and, in some cases, downright covetable.

Reflecting the diverse cast of voices represented in New York, London, Milan and Paris, there were collections to match every mood next fall. Apocalyptic chic? You’ve got it. Unbridled sex? Sure, why not? Louche tailoring? Always. Hope, despair, calm and crazy—everything one could imagine was on display. And yet, certain themes could not be ignored, appearing and reappearing in collection after collection.

Here, 10 of the season’s most directional trends as spotted on runways around the world.
