Delicias, a small city in the southeastern part of Chihuahua, in northern Mexico, carries a name that translates to “delights” in English, as if quietly pointing to the simplicity and calm that surround it. It is the hometown of Ed Maverick, one of the most prominent Mexican singer-songwriters of his generation. “In Delicias, life is so simple that it has a tenderness,” he says. “I love seeing the elderly sitting outside their homes, just watching time pass.”

People don’t like solitude. They don’t like the absurdity of a giant space. To me, it's surprising and strange. It gives me freedom.

I try to work alone most of the time. That gives me space to do things the way I want.
