In 2012, Dusseldorf sneaker store Afew created the Gel Lyte 3 'Koi' to honor the city’s sizable Japanese community. In 2015, ASICS offered Afew the opportunity to remaster the shoe for the mass market for the Gel Lyte 3’s 25th anniversary. Released during Dusseldorf’s annual Japan Day festival, the split-tongue sneaker features a suede and leather build dressed in a red, white and black color scheme inspired by the koi. A multicolored print appears on the outsole, with a translucent insert in the heel, while the right heel features a leather patch with the Japanese word for friendship. For the in-store release at Afew, the shoe came packaged in a special wooden bento box that included Afew x ASICS Chopsticks and two pairs of extra laces.
