Pencils Over iPhones: The Row’s Quietest Power Move

Examining the no-phone policy that turned the famously private label into one of Fashion Week’s most talked-about shows.

On February 28, 2024, guests arriving at The Row's Fall/Winter 2024 show in Paris were handed green tea, coffee and a small notepad with a pencil. Phones were asked to stay away entirely. For the length of the show, the only record anyone in the room could make of it was whatever they wrote by hand. It wasn't a one-off. The Row has kept that policy running through every season since, most recently at its Spring 2027 show in early October.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have never properly explained the ban, which perfectly tracks with how the twins run the mysterious label. The Row has never run paid ads and neither Olsen keeps a social media account, so a show designed to produce zero content isn't a departure from the brand's playbook.
