High Scores in Chinatown: Inside Deb Never’s ARCADE Night
The bedroom pop maestro previewed her new album for friends, family and NYC’s creative community among neon lights and 8-bit synths.
Tuesday night in Chinatown sounded like 8-bit synths, the sharp click of joysticks and the haunting, melodic vocals of Deb Never’s highly anticipated new album, ARCADE. Held on May 5 at the iconic Chinatown Family Fun Center, the evening turned the venue into a physical manifestation of the album’s sonic landscape: a place where nostalgia meets a restless, neon-soaked present.
As the first tracks of ARCADE played over the speakers, the room filled with Deb's friends and family. NYC’s creative vanguard heard unreleased tracks like "How to Forget" and "ineedmore" for the first time, while playing cabinet favorites like Pump It Up, Mario Kart and Power Roll.
Mark “The Cobrasnake” Hunter was on the floor all night, capturing the takeover in his signature high-flash, raw style. His lens documented a room devoid of pretense: Deb talking over a game of Street Fighter, the blur of mid-tempo songs and the kinetic energy of a community celebrating a breakthrough moment for an artist that's always pushing further.
Revisit the night below and look out for Deb Never’s ARCADE, out everywhere on Friday, May 8.
