From 'Hellraiser' x Supreme to 'The Shining' x UNDERCOVER, looking back at fashion’s fascination with horror.

A Nightmare on Elm Street/Scream/The People Under the Stairs x Raf Simons SS21&nbsp;
As one of fashion’s most cinematic designers, Raf Simons has <a href="https://www.goat.com/editorial/raf-simons-movie-inspirations-runway-david-lynch">aligned himself with film</a> on countless occasions. This came to a head during his SS21 show when Simons sent out a sweep of looks indebted to several classics by horror auteur Wes Craven: A Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream and The People Under the Stairs. The show was appropriately eerie, with dead-eyed models slinking onto the catwalk from wormholes in the wall.&nbsp;

Halloween x Moschino Resort 2020
There’s an inherent campiness to horror movies, so it’s not surprising that all the exaggerated dramatics, performative screams and dark humor found their way into a Moschino collection. For Resort 2020, Jeremy Scott created an all-American, rosebush-dotted, white-picketed runway—a foreboding scene for any scream queen. As John Carpenter’s Halloween soundtrack reverberated, models ran from house to house like Drew Barrymore in <a href="https://www.vogue.com/fashion-shows/resort-2020/moschino/slideshow/collection#1">Scream</a>, before Violet Chachki trundled out in the image of <a href="https://www.vogue.com/fashion-shows/resort-2020/moschino/slideshow/collection#88">Morticia Addams</a>.&nbsp;

The Exorcist x Brain Dead
Creative director Kyle Ng put the “dead” in Brain Dead when he dropped an Exorcist capsule last year, printing caps, totes, hoodies and T-shirts with iconic stills from the seminal 1973 film. Indeed, the terrifying imagery found within these kinds of heritage horror movies finds a natural home in streetwear, which, given its ubiquity over the past decade, is constantly searching for a new, hair-raising edge.&nbsp;

A24 x Online Ceramics
More than an Oscar-winning studio, these days A24 is also an established <a href="https://www.goat.com/editorial/a24-online-ceramics-movie-merch-trend">lifestyle brand</a>, creating merch at the same rate it produces era-defining cinema. For its apparel drops, the New York-based company partnered with T-shirt brand Online Ceramics, elevating its promotional garb for films like The Lighthouse, Saint Maud, Midsommar and Hereditary to streetwear levels of hype. The ongoing collaboration plumbs the kitsch aesthetics of B-side horror movies for nostalgic fashion points, be that Satanic pentagrams, haunted treehouses or schlocky vintage-style posters on T-shirts, long-sleeves and sweatshirts.

Jaws x CALVIN KLEIN 205W39NYC SS19
During Raf Simons' short-lived tenure at Calvin Klein, the Belgian designer explored the American underbelly, subverting cultural tropes to uncanny effect. For SS19, his final collection at the house, Simons mapped the country’s Trump-era tensions onto the 1975 creature-feature Jaws, sending out poster-printed T-shirts as well as Breton tops, deconstructed wetsuits and snorkel goggles.&nbsp;

Frankenstein x Prada FW19
Miuccia Prada is known for her eccentric subversions on taste, so it was only fitting that her FW19 collection would be adorned with Universal Pictures’ classic Frankenstein monster. The green ghoul was multiplied across men’s poplin shirts and quickly became a street-style staple. The theme was also extended across intarsia knitwear with beating hearts and dismembered limbs, speaking to author Mary Shelley’s fear of humanity, danger and chaos.&nbsp;

The Shining x UNDERCOVER SS18
From A Clockwork Orange to 2001: A Space Odyssey, an anthology of cult classics has informed Jun Takahashi’s catalog of UNDERCOVER collections. To close his SS18 show, the designer cast identical twins and dressed them in the pale blue, prissy doll dresses that the ill-fated Grady twins wear in filmmaker Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of Stephen King’s classic novel The Shining. Only he decorated these with long tresses of red diamante beads, which gushed from the neckline like blood from a slit throat.

Hellraiser x Supreme SS18
There’s little left that <a href="https://www.goat.com/editorial/supreme-history">Supreme</a> hasn’t emblazoned its logo across, but one of its most iconic collaborations comes by way of Hellraiser, the 1987 supernatural horror flick starring the deranged BDSM-clad demon Pinhead. Released as part of its SS18 drop, the film’s nail-headed villain featured across jackets, knits, tracksuits and basketball tops, captioned with “Hell on Earth” in block lettering.&nbsp;

Carrie/Rosemary's Baby/Friday the 13th x CALVIN KLEIN 205W39NYC SS18
As part of his commitment to warp all things Americana, Raf Simons’ SS18 collection was a smorgasbord of frightful references, including Carrie, Rosemary’s Baby and Friday the 13th. Models paced the runway in floaty negligees, which conjured the image of Mia Farrow’s antichrist-bearing mother-to-be in Rosemary’s Baby. High-shine rain coats looked as though they had been slicked in blood like a post-prom Carrie, while stilettos had been forged from hockey masks a la Friday the 13th’s Jason Voorhees.

Suspiria x UNDERCOVER FW19&nbsp;
It wasn’t Dario Argento’s 1977 original that inspired Jun Takahashi to emblazon a full-body Tilda Swinton onto a knee-length coat, but ​​Suspiria’s 2018 Luca Guadagnino remake, which follows the same disturbing story of a lurid Berlin dance company-cum-coven. It was a literal reference point for UNDERCOVER, screen printing the movie’s most gruesome scenes and characters onto trapeze dresses and blouson hoodies.&nbsp;

Eyes Without a Face x Rick Owens FW16&nbsp;
Known throughout the industry for his dark and Brutalist-tinged vision, a Rick Owens show is often synonymous with huge plumes of smoke and harsh extraterrestrial sets. The designer has shocked audiences with exposed genitalia, alien prosthetics and even harnessed models, upside-down, onto other models. So when Owens found a kindred spirit in the 1960 expressionist French horror flick Eyes Without a Face for FW16, it didn’t come as a surprise.&nbsp;

The Hunger x Alexander McQueen SS96&nbsp;
There’s a sickly comedic level of bloodlust to The Hunger—the titillating 1983 vampire film starring David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve, who spend the entirety of the film sucking the blood of young goths. As the subject of <a href="https://www.goat.com/editorial/alexander-mcqueen-fashion-influence">Alexander McQueen</a>’s SS96 show, shirts were stained with bloody handprints and claw-slashed tops, while spliced trousers flapped like gaping wounds and transparent bustiers were filled with real worms.&nbsp;
