The Rise of Berlin's Most Exciting Tattoo Collective

The founder of creative powerhouses in Berlin and Brussels gets candid about the industry, his tattooing “mafia” and coming up in the world of ‘90s graffiti.

A close friend once got arrested for graffitiing a train. He’s an adult now; it’s probably been 20 years since his teenage tagging days, but he credits graffiti not with messing up his life but in a way, saving it. It got him into drawing, design and eventually, industrial design. It was his first love, and opened up a world of interests he had never considered.

For the tattoo artist Gael Cleinow, aka Handjob Tattoo and the founder of Future Berlin and Under Score Brussels, graffiti was also his first art and fundamental to his journey. (Those who know graffiti can see it in his style.)

If you don’t know Cleinow’s work, you should. Based for many years in Berlin and now in his hometown of Brussels, he is known for ushering in a new style and culture in tattooing. His aesthetic is graphic, outline style—a departure from not just traditional style but also popular modern forms like photorealism or the watercolor you might see at a studio like Bang Bang NYC. Howling Dobermans, crashing cars, Michelangelo David’s with winding laurels or flames, Beavis and Butt-Head embracing in a kiss and a sly ass-grab, lovers, of all genders, engaged with each other. Bold lines with compositions that tell a story. It can be playful, sexual, subversive, thoughtful in ways both subtle and provocative.
